This essay became a one-man show at the New York Museum of Modern Art and was heralded as the Museum’s BiCenntennial Showcase ”The Spirit of Art In America.” For four decades, on several continents, Norman Garrett has captured the stark and sometimes majestic beauty of the world around him. A street corner passed by every day by thousands of people without a glance-ignored, invisible, irrelevant, is resurrected in his images to be vital and engaging. His gift becomes most precious when viewing the depth of the intimacy to the people in his photographs. The diversity of his images is compelling. May the faces be of weary migrants on the backroads of Eastern Europe, proud street vendors in Morocco, excited cheers of kids scoring touchdowns at Westlake Stadium, or the most precious of times - a bride on her wedding day.
